The Bosch GCM12SD solves the biggest practical problem with sliding miter saws: they need a foot of clearance behind the saw for the sliding rails. Bosch's Axial Glide system replaces traditional rails with a smooth-gliding articulated arm that requires zero rear clearance. You can push this saw against a wall and still make full-width cuts. At $549 — $100 less than the DeWalt DWS780 — it offers comparable cut capacity and precision with a meaningful space advantage. The trade-off: no XPS shadow-line system (uses a standard laser), and dust collection is merely adequate.

Axial Glide — zero rear clearance needed
Standard laser (not as accurate as XPS)
$549 — $100 less than DeWalt DWS780
Dust collection adequate, not excellent
Smooth, precise sliding action
Heavier than some competitors
Push against any wall
Laser needs periodic calibration

Why Axial Glide Matters

Traditional sliding miter saws use rails that extend 8-12" behind the saw during cuts. This means you need over 2 feet of clear space behind the saw — impossible against a wall, problematic in small workshops. The Axial Glide eliminates this entirely. The saw head moves on an articulated arm that stays within the saw's footprint. Mount it on a bench against the wall, build a permanent miter station — the Bosch doesn't care.

DeWalt DWS780 vs. Bosch GCM12SD

These are the two best miter saws in the $500-700 range, and the choice is straightforward. Need to push the saw against a wall? Bosch. Want the best cut indicator? DeWalt DWS780 with XPS. Everything else — power, capacity, build quality — is close enough that either saw will serve you well for years.
